For a short time each year, the remote Canadian town of Churchill, Manitoba is transformed into the Polar Bear Capital of the World. This curious place, accessible by air, sea or train, with its long main street, low rise buildings and distinctly pioneering feel, becomes the centre of attention for bears and visitors alike.
In October and November, as many as 1200 bears gather here on the icy tundra, waiting for the sea to freeze so they can wander out in search of seals. After fasting for the summer, the bears are particularly hungry. Churchill is perched on a spit of land between the western shore of Hudson Bay and the Churchill River and for centuries, this peninsula has been the bears natural access point into the bay.
Polar bears have the ability to detect scent from as far away as 20 miles. Churchill proves irresistible, particularly if the big freeze is taking a while to happen. But dont be concerned, the resident Polar Bear Police have a tried and tested humane procedure for dealing with strays that wander where they are not wanted. It involves a rather large trap, tranquilliser dart, a brief stay in the polar bear jail, then a helicopter trip out of town to relocate somewhere more appropriate. This closely monitored procedure works well for the bears and the townsfolk.
The great advantage of polar bear watching in Churchill is that its a comfortable adventure. Instead of camping on an ice field with an arctic wind howling through your tent, after youve spent a day with the bears you simply return to civilisation, eat a hearty home cooked meal and then sleep in a comfortable hotel bed.
Temperatures can range from minus ten degrees to nine degrees and although there is likely to be snow and possibly rain, there is also a good chance of having bright, clear days so bring sunglasses. The particularly dark nights and lack of artificial lighting outside of town, you may well get to witness a display of the northern lights.
Churchill occupies a transitional zone where the stunted trees of the taiga meet the mosses of the tundra. Blanketed with snow in the winter and covered by thousands of bogs and lakes in the summer, this terrain is completely flat until it reaches the sloping banks of the Churchill River and the ridge around Hudson Bay, whose grey quartzite boulders have been rubbed smooth by the action of the ice, wind and water.

The Southeast Asian Games will be in its 25th edition comes year 2009 when it’s held in Vientiane, Laos. It will also be SEA Games 50th year since its inception. The biennial multi-sport event was formed back in 1959 and was previously called Southeast Asian Peninsular Games or SEAP Games. Laos holds the honor of being host country for the first time in its history for the year 2009.
The history behind the games was that when the Southeast Asian nation’s delegates attended the 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo, during a joint meeting they all agreed to have a sports organization within the Southeast Asian region that will promote closer bilateral ties.
The founding seven members were Thailand, Philippines, Malaya (now Malaysia), Laos, South Vietnam (now Vietnam), Burma (now Myanmar), and Cambodia. The Southeast Asian Games Federation numbers grew over time and Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam and Timor-Leste joined the ranks.
For the 25th Southeast Asian Games, the capital city Vientiane will be main games area. Due to decades of war and lacking in resources and finances, this impoverished communist country has reduced the number of sports to be contested at the SEA Games. It dwindled the figure to a proposed 25 games. This is far lesser than the 43 sports being contested at the last SEA Games in Thailand, 2007. The 25 disciplines that will be in competition are:
1. Archery
2. Aquatics
3. Athletics
4. Badminton
5. Basketball
6. Billiards and Snooker
7. Bodybuilding
8. Boxing
9. Bowling
10. Football
11. Golf
12. Handball
13. Judo
14. Karatedo
15. Muay Thai
16. Pencak Silat
17. Pétanque
18. Shooting
19. Shuttlecock kicking
20. Table tennis
21. Taekwondo
22. Traditional boat race
23. Volleyball
24. Wrestling
25. Wushu
The news that Laos has dropped a considerable number of sports and run the risk of not being able to hold the event due to financial constraints, it has led to other SEA Games countries and even help outside of the region in aid. Vietnam has agreed to help out in the staging and organization of sports and footing the bill on a new $19 million Games Village. Thailand has offered exchange lesson for Laos’s officials for more pointers in SEA Games preparation, which is worth some $2.9 million.
Singapore are to provide teachers and technicians, and organization such as the Yuuwakai Association of Japan has agreed to donate US$100,000 for the new Karatedo training center in Laos, while China has agreed to chalk up the main cost for the new Laos National Stadium. It is estimated a total US$85 million worth of aid has been handed by various nations.
With the outpouring of international help, it is reported that the progress of Laos preparation for the SEA Games have been encouraging. The aid sped-up the logistics preparations and facilities are now up to 60 per cent from completion. However if Laos does fail to meet the qualifications to hold the event in time, the games would be moved to Singapore as an alternative hosting backup option.
The games in Laos are slated to open on December 13th, 2009 and the closing ceremony is scheduled for 21st December. The opening, closing and major games will be held at the new Laos National Stadium.
Laos has employed the use of their national animal, the white elephants as the Official Mascots. Named Mr. Champee and Ms. Champa, these two Lao Elephants will represent the national flower of Laos.

The history of the rhino can be traced back to 45 million years ago.
The Baluchitherium, an ancestor of the Indian rhino, was the largest land mammal that ever lived. It was 18 feet high and 36 feet long. It lived over 20 million years ago.
Fortunately, the rhino is on its way back, thanks to the efforts of well wishers and volunteers.
THE PROBLEM
The problem of the rhino has been its beauty, the horn. It is made of keratin, a substance found in human hair and nails. Powdered Rhino horn has been used extensively in traditional medicine in Asia and to make ornamental dagger handles in the Yemen. The demand is so great that traders are prepared to pay poachers vast sums to kill rhinos for their horns.
Because of these, Rhinos have faced wholesale slaughter. To stop these abuse governments and bodies such as Save the Rhino teamed up together to halt the abusive. Thanks to them, the overall decline of the rhino has been halted, and populations in Africa are beginning to stabilize.
A CLOSER LOOK…..
The rhino belongs to the family Rhinoceroteridae. They are 5 species placed in 4 genera.
Three of these species are found in south-central Asia and the other two live in Africa south
of the Sahara. Rhinos inhabit savannahs, shrubby regions and dense forests.
The African species live in more open areas than do the Asian species.
Their habitat has to generally have access to water. They usually drink everyday.
Their horns are dermal growths originally composed of compressed keratin. Usually they have 1-2 horns. Both hind and forefeet have 3 digits with a small hoof. They are known to have poor eye sight but strong hearing and smell. The tough and wrinkled skin has very few scattered hairs. The tail ends with stiff bristles.
BREEDING…
Female rhinos give birth every 2 years to a single calf, which is active soon after birth.
The calf remains with the mother until the next offspring is born.
Gestation is 420-570 days. Sexual maturity is reached at 7-10 years for bulls and 4-6 years for cows. They a life span of up to 50 years.
Note that the African rhinos are more aggressive than Asian species.
They use their horns to attack and toss their enemies.
This can be especially dangerous and can kill attackers instantly.
African white rhinos have a preference of feeding low to the open grounds whereas the black rhino usually browse on leaves and have a tendency to stay hidden.
They have been noted to be more active in the evening, through the night and in early morning, spending their days resting in heavy cover.
Rhinos sleep in both standing and laying positions and love to wallow in muddy pools and sandy riverbeds. They penetrate dense thickets by shear force, often leaving behind a trail that other animals later use. Rhinos run with a cumbersome motion, reaching top speed at a canter. They can, however, attain speeds of up to 45 km per hour for short distances.Basically the black rhino is more solitary and territorial except for the mother-child unit.
Groups of adult cows or bachelor bulls are sometimes formed, however, and during the mating season pairs of rhinos may stay together for up to 4 months.
Rhinos mark their territories with urine and by dropping their dung in well-defined piles that can reach up to 1 m in height. They often furrow the areas around these piles with their horns and make the piles even more conspicuous.
The black rhino has a wide vocal range and can possibly communicate like an elephant,
through frequencies below the range of human hearing. Breathing is an important part of communication.
Unlike the white rhino-calf, the black rhino calf normally runs behind its mother.
CURRENT STATUS..
There were an estimated 20,000 black rhino in Kenya in the 1970s.
By 1982 the population was reduced to fewer than 400. Since then, their number has
increased and now stands at over 450. The number in fenced areas has risen at an average
rate of four percent each year when the conditions are good.
Since 1984 the Kenyan government has pursued an active program devoted to the
recovery of Kenya’s black rhino, with efforts centering on the development of specially
protected or fenced sanctuaries on government and private land, such as Lewa.
Rhino populations under custodianship both on private land (Solio Ranch) and in some
State-run areas (such as Nairobi National Park) have provided set up for new populations
(including reintroducing animals into an electrified-fence sanctuary inside the KWS-run Tsavo West and Meru National Parks). The private sector thus plays an important part in the conservation of rhino in Kenya and currently supplies many of the animals being used to restock state parks.
Kenya is currently the stronghold of the Eastern African subspecies Diceros bicornis michaeli,
a home to about 88 % of the population in 1995. Like South Africa and Namibia, Kenya is doing translocation to set up new populations while aiming to ensure that donor populations
remain productive. The public plight of the black rhino has attracted support from many different areas. Today, scientists are formulating a method of «fingerprinting» rhino horn based on the nutrient content of each specific rhino conservation area. This will enable them to pinpoint the area a rhino came from, its family group, and even its preferred diet. It is also an important step toward eradicating poaching, as scientists will be able to determine where a rhino was when it was killed.

The year 1966 is a significant year for the Cincinnati Bengals because it was the year when their existence was first established. Then governor of Ohio, James A. Rhodes, convinced Paul Brown during a time when he wanted to become involved in pro football again, that Ohio needed another team. Cincinnati became the most logical choice.
The name Bengals was personally chosen by Brown so that there a link would be created with the past professional football in the state. There was already a previous team who used the name Bengals and played in three American football fields. Another inspiration for the name came from the fact that the city’s zoo was home to a rare white Bengal Tiger. The orange shade that the Bengals are known for today is thought to be chosen by Brown to insult Art Modell since it is the same color used by Modell’s previous team. He just added the color black to make the team’s color unique. Brown financed the Bengals only when he was sure that the team will become an NFL franchise after the merger.
To accommodate the games of the Cincinnati Bengals, the local government of Cincinnati, with the support of the governor, made plans of building a multi-purpose facility in the riverfront section of the city. This stadium was officially known as the Riverfront Stadium. When the merger was completed in 1970, the Bengals found themselves with an instant rivalry with the Cleveland Browns as a result of the rivalry between Paul Brown and Art Modell.
The inaugural season of the games in Cincinnati was played at the Nippert Stadium. Although they hold a 3-11 record, they still had something to be proud of – they had a team member who was proclaimed to be the Rookie of the Year. For the first eight seasons of the team, it was Paul Brown who coached the team and he was very particular about drafting players with above average intelligence. The players whom Brown drafted eventually became very successful in the other careers that they pursued.
It was only in the 70′s that the Bengals brought their games to the Riverfront Stadium, a place which they shared with the Cincinnati Reds. It was only in the year 2000 that the team moved to the Paul Brown Stadium. The team reached the playoffs three times during that decade but were not able to win any of the postseason games. The year 1975 gave the team the highest winning percentage in franchise history with an 11-3 record but it only earned them a Wild Card spot in the playoffs.
The Cincinnati Bengals reached the Super Bowl twice in the 1980′s but lost twice to the San Francisco 49ers. Paul Brown died on the year 1990 and the control of the team transferred to his son, Mike Brown. When Mike took over, profit was given a higher priority over winning which made the game lose one after the other. They only improved in 2003 with a new head coach but ever since then, the team continually lost like they did in the early 90′s.

Here are some interesting facts about tigers:
1. Tigers are the largest naturally occurring specie of cats.
2. Of tiger subspecies, the Siberian Tiger is the biggest cat that can weigh well up to eight hundred pounds.
3. Tigers are very beautiful and their striped coat makes for ideal camouflage.
4. A tiger’s stripes are like fingerprints – no two are alike. In fact the stripes’ pattern is often used to identify individual tigers in the wild.
5. In India paw prints or pug marks are often used by local wildlife officials to identify individual tigers. However, this technique is now deemed to be flawed since an individual tiger may leave several different types of paw prints depending on its speed and terrain.
6. Tigers are largely solitary cats and are most active between dusk and dawn.
7. Tigers are largely muscular and rely on stealth and power to bring down a prey rather than speed. Like other big cats most tiger ambushes are unsuccessful.
8. Tigers are perhaps the most notorious big cat for man-eating. In fact the single greatest man-eater is history is believed to be the Champawat Tigress who killed over four hundred thirty people in India decades ago until she was finally killed by the great Jim Corbett.
9. Tigers are highly ferocious and unlike the laid back male lion, it’s never wise to turn your back to a tiger even in captivity. Even seasoned zoo keepers report tigers assume a stalking position and prepare to strike when they turn their back to them in the cage.
10. Tigers have suffered greatly at the hand of humans for their beauty and majestic appeal – they have been hunted nearly to extinction in most of their former territories – the largest pool is now in India where recent reports suggest there may be as few as fifteen hundred of the Bengal tigers remaining.
11. An adult male tiger in the wild requires around one hundred and fifty kilograms of meat a month.
12. If Chinese traditional medicine makers were to stop using animal parts – tigers, rhinos and many other endangered animals would benefit greatly.
13. One of the best places for watching tigers in the wild is the Bandhavgarh National Park in Madhya Pradesh in central India.

Overview:
The HD4170 Rhino Roll is a production quality electric spiral coil inserter that is made as part of the Rhin-O-Tuff line of binding equipment.
This machine is designed as companion for your heavy duty Rhino modular binding punch. In fact, it can even be bolted to the top of most HD and OD series punches for convenience and to save space.
The HD-4170 has dual powered adjustable rollers to help spin your coils onto your documents.
Strengths / Features:
The rollers used on the HD 4170 are excellent. It uses one high quality rubber roller to grip the coil and another smooth black roller to help make sure that the coil doesn’t get off track. Both of these rollers spin to help keep the spiral moving across the edge of your book. This is similar to the design used on the GBC CC2700 which is a much more expensive machine.
The smaller bottom roller on the HD4170 is fully adjustable. If you are using this machine with smaller diameter books you can set the rollers so that they are closer together. Likewise, when using large diameter coils, it is possible to increase the distance between the rollers. This feature allows Rhin-O-Tuff to claim that the HD4170 is compatible with all of the sizes and pitches of spiral coil that are available on the market.
The Rhino Tuff 4170 includes a pair of spiral coil crimpers in the box with the machine. This isn’t a huge deal since the crimpers are only worth about $30. However, the machine has a holder on the side of it to keep your crimpers within reach. This helps to keep your crimping pliers from getting lost and ensures that they are readily available when you need them. This is very important since it is nearly impossible to bind documents with spiral coils if you don’t have a pair of crimping pliers.
The Rhino Roll HD4170 can either be used as a standalone spiral coil inserter or it can be bolted to the top of your HD or OD series Rhino-Tuff binding punch. Attaching this machine to your Rhinotuff punch can help you to conserve space and maximize productivity. However, the fact that you don’t have to attach this machine is nice for organizations that prefer to bind documents in an assembly line fashion.
Weaknesses / Limitations:
Although Rhin-O-Tuff claims that this machine can be used with all pitches and diameters of coil, this is only sort of true. Although it is theoretically possible to use this machine with extremely large sizes of coil (35mm – 50mm) it is not really practical. It is extremely difficult to use this type of coil inserter with these large sizes of coil. The coil gets caught on the edge of the pages and becomes deformed causing a big mess. This can be improved by using an oval hole punch and by properly forming the spines of your book. However, it is still difficult.
Attaching this machine to your Rhin-O-Tuff punch is no small task. You need a special kit in order to bolt the two machines together. This kit is sold separately from the machine. However, even with the kit you can expect to spend between 30-45 minutes figuring out how to attach the two machines (that is how long it took me). Considering this fact, it probably isn’t advisable to bolt your machines together if you ever plan on using the two machines separately. It is also important to note that this machine will not bolt to horizontal punches or to the HD7500.
Recommendation:
If you have a Rhin-O-Tuff binding punch and are looking for a high quality coil inserter to use with your machine the Rhino Roll HD4170 is the logical choice.
This high quality machine is both versatile and durable. It is designed for production environments where productivity is essential.
The dual roller design and the fact that you can fully adjust the rollers make it compatible with a huge variety of coil sizes and pitches. However, it is still difficult to use extremely large coils with this system.
Even so, this is one of the highest quality coil inserters that I have seen and it is an excellent choice for high volume users who need a standalone machine or who want to bolt an inserter to the top of their modular binding punch.

Overview:
The Rhin-O-Tuff OD4100 is a module that is designed to be used with the OD-4300 spiral coil inserter.
This device allows you to quickly and easily adapt your OD4300 coil inserter into a more traditional roller style inserter.
The OD4300 is a mandrel style inserting machine that is designed for use with 36″ coil lengths. It is great for long runs but doesn’t work well for short run applications or for use with 12″ cut length spiral coils.
This machine allows you to have the best of both worlds.
Strengths / Features:
Combining the OD-4100 with the OD-4300 offers your organization a great deal of flexibility. For long runs and custom length books you can use the unique inserting system offered by the OD-4300. However, the OD-4100 give you an option for short run production with 12″ standard coils. This gives your operators a choice depending on the project that they are working on and their level of training.
The OD-4100 is much easier than the OD-4300, especially for untrained or inexperienced users. With the OD4100 all you have to do is start the coil onto the edge of the book and then let the coil inserter spin it on the rest of the way. There are no complex adjustments that need to be made.
The OD4100 is incredibly simple to set up for use with your OD4300. All you need to do is set it on top of your OD4300 and tighten the knob to fasten it in place. Once you are done using it and want to switch back you simply undo the large black knob on the right side of the machine and lift it off. It doesn’t get much easier than that.
The OD4300 is only compatible with spiral coils up to 32mm in diameter. In theory you could use the OD4100 for use with larger sized coils. However, if you plan on using this device for large diameter books you might want to consider a spine former to help you shape the spines of your books.
Weaknesses / Limitations:
The OD4100 cannot be used apart from the OD4300. It is simply a set of rollers. The 4300 provides the power to move the rollers. You can separate the two machines or use them simultaneously.
The OD4300 is designed to be bolted onto an OD4000 or OD4300 rhino tuff binding punch. If you don’t have one of these punches you need to buy an OD3500 binding station and you can bolt it to that. This means that you actually need more than just the OD4300 and OD4100 to use this device. You also need the binding station or Rhin-O-Tuff punch that will attach to the 4300. If you don’t have all of these pieces, the 4100 won’t work.
Although the OD4100 says that it can be used with all pitches and diameters of spiral coil, it is difficult to use this machine with large sized coils. Binding large sized documents using an electric coil inserter requires you to shape the spine of your document to match the curve of the coil. It is also a lot easier if you use an oval hole pattern.
Recommendation:
If you already own an OD-4300 coil inserter, I would highly recommend this as an add on accessory. It is easier to use and adds a great deal of functionality.
This system gives you the choice between using 12 inch and 36 inch spiral coils.
However, if you do not yet own the OD4300, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this combination.
The OD-4300 is fairly difficult to use and requires an OD series Rhin-O-Tuff punch or the OD-3500 binding station to function. You should be able to find a high quality coil inserter for less money than all of the components that are required for use with this system.

Bears are part of our lives in the beginning. Does it sound strange?? Let us count that how many of us have not played with ‘Teddy’ in our lives. How many of us have not given the same spongy cute ‘soft toy’ to our children? You answer is be none or tends to zero. Right from the childhood we are acquainted with bears, though there are many facts which we are unaware of. We have tried to answer all your queries and to fulfill your eagerness to know about bears. The Bear Planet site contains all about bears and its various species.
A bear is a large mammal belonging to Ursidae family of the order Carnivora. The scientific classification for this animal is; Phylum of Chordata and kingdom of Animalia. The suborder of bears is Caniformia. The bears have large bodies with powerful limbs. The hind legs of bear are strong enough to bear its weight. They are gifted with broad paws, rounded ears and long snouts. The bears have plantigrade stance to adapt the speed which can go up to 30mph! The fur color of bear varies from species to species which ranges from all black or all brown, blond or cream, black and white, full white etc. The full white bears are also known as Polar bear or Ice bear. The bear’s life spam ranges between 25 yr to 40 yr. Bears live in a variety of locations. From the tropics to the Arctic region and from forests to the snowfields, you may find bear anywhere.
Bears have entered in our culture and nationalism since years. Some evidence proves that the symbol of bear was used in many ways. In the Korean mythology the bear is identified as their ancestor and symbolic animal. The giant panda is considered a Chinese national treasure. The Swiss capital Bern has adopted its name from the bar, a bear in German. The bear is national symbol for Russia, Germany and Soviet Union. The subspecies of Grizzly Bear is printed on the Flag of California. No wonder that bear has also entered into our business as the ‘bear market’ is labeled as a period of declining the prices in stock markets!
The bears are hunted since years and hence the laws have been passed in many areas of the world saving bears from the hunters. The reason behind this is using bears as food or as medicines. Many part of China, Korea, Vietnam and Japan use bears’ body parts and their secretions especially bile as medicine. Some of the species like Grizzly Bear, is therefore listed as threatened in the contiguous United States and endangered in some parts of Canada.
We have tried to provide almost all information related to bears and also to fulfill your eagerness to know more about bears. In our unique section called ‘poll’, we conduct survey on various questions related to a bear. Our motto is to take care about all the species of bear and to educate visitors about all aspects and attributes of Bears.
